Damascus College takes part in ANZAC commemorations at The Shrine
On April 20 10 SRC members attended Legacy’s 87th ANZAC commemoration ceremony at the Shrine in Melbourne. It was a very gratifying day for all attendees.
Meeting at Legacy House in Ballarat at 8:20am, the group was in position for the ceremony which began at 11am commencing with an introductory speech. The Shrine guard then moved into position to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria, with a royal salute. The governor then made a welcoming speech along with the President of Melbourne Legacy, Hugh Roberton.
Various Australian songs were sung throughout the ceremony such as Waltzing Matilda, I am Australian and The National Anthem. One of the last events was the laying of the wreaths by the attending schools alongside the eternal flame. The Legacy president then recited ‘The Ode’ whilst the bugler sounded ‘Last Post’. This was followed by one minute of silence and the bugler then sounding ‘Rouse’.
After the ceremony the students had the opportunity to explore The Shrine and discover all its history. This was an astonishing experience.
The entire day was enjoyable and informative and is an experience that will always be valued. The group recommends a visit to the Shrine and would like to thank Legacy Ballarat for the amazing opportunity.
