At Damascus College Ballarat reading is encouraged and an extensive range of children’s, adolescent and adult fiction is available to students and staff.
Australian Children’s Book Week
This event occurs in August and celebrates the wonderful range of children’s and adolescent literature published in Australia each year. At Damascus College Ballarat all students in Years 7 to 10 have an English session devoted to this special week.
An author is invited to speak to all Year 7 students. In 2009 the visiting author will be Sue Lawson, author of such books as Dragon’s Tear, Allie McGregor’s True Colours, My Gran’s Different, Finding Darcy and others.

What's New?
Book Clubs
- Both campuses have Book Clubs for interested students held once a fortnight at lunchtime in the library.
- Students discuss books and help choose new ones for the library.
- Refreshments are provided
Visiting Authors
To inspire reading and writing, authors come to talk to students in Years 7, 8. and 9. In 2008 the authors who visited were Sue Lawson, author of Dragon’s Tear, Allie McGregor’s True Colours, My Gran’s Different and Finding Darcy. Archie Fussilo, author of The Dons, An Earful of Static, and Bruises, spoke to Year 9 students. Doug MacLeod, author of The Clockwork Forest, Frank Boulderbuster: the Last of the Great Swagmen, Kevin the Troll and Sister Madge’s Book of Nuns, spoke to Year 8 students.
Year 7 Reading Program
All students in Year 7 take part in a Reading program as part of the subject “Library and Information Skills.” Reading for enjoyment is promoted as an important activity and students are expected to read at least five books and points contribute towards the House competition.
