Staff use of the library

Educational and Curriculum resources. Both libraries contain excellent up-to-date curriculum material for staff use which has been purchased by Domains to support teaching. These can be searched by using the AIMS library system from any computer.

Class research

Both libraries are available for class bookings during the day. You do need to book in advance by phoning library staff on ext 250 – Mt Clear, or ext 251 – for Victoria Street.

Information Literacy at Damascus College Ballarat

Library staff expertise is in ‘information retrieval’.

We aim to provide you, and your classes, with a variety of research strategies, using different technologies and adapted to your requirements.

How? 

  • do the leg work on finding websites
  • prepare resource lists for your classes, (books, video and online)
  • create pathfinders (a logical pathway through information sources)
  • help you with digital and AV assistance

By the end of 2009, we aim to have a complete resource sheet for all subjects linked to each class in Simon Learning Areas, incorporating:

  • links to websites
  • relevant reference titles
  • Dewey numbers for books and DVDs, noting particularly important titles
  • associated Clickview video titles

Year 7 Information Literacy

All Year 7 students at Damascus College Ballarat take part in a program called “Library and Information Skills” where they are introduced to the library and its resources as well as concepts of Information and Communication Technology. Their developing skills are fostered to best enable them to actively learn. 

  1. Using the College network – accessing information available from the Library Homepage, Simon and the school home pages.
  2. Managing files – setting up folders, saving and opening work using various storage formats.
  3. Revision and better use of Word, Publisher and PowerPoint to manipulate text and formats.
  4. Better research techniques incorporating:   Thinking : Inquiry;  Investigating and finding information;  Thinking : Processing information; Thinking: evaluation
  5. Accessing useful information efficiently:
    - Using Weblinks, Search Engines, Online Encyclopedias, EBSCO,
    - Using the AIMS Library Catalogue to access library resources.
  6. Comparing and evaluating different websites and databases.
  7. Exploring the Cybernetrix program for Cyber safety.
  8. Using books and encyclopedias for research.
  9. Writing bibliographies.

Information Literacy is on-going in Years 8 – 10 with occasional specific lessons.

  • advanced search strategies on the Internet and using EBSCO
  • further evaluation and comparisons of websites
  • Clickview
  • more mature emphasis on Cyber safety especially within social networking
  • using books and encyclopedias for research
  • writing bibliographies

Library staff are available to visit classes for specific lessons:

E.g.: understanding the ABS website; using EBSCO more effectively; blog building.

Clickview / TV Programs

Clickview : what is it?

The College subscribes to Clickview which is a database of dvds and videos.

Clickview is ALSO a capturing and storage site for AV material which we choose to load onto it.

Virtually anything can be converted & stored on Clickview, eg.:

Any hard copy Video or DVD, video from Youtube, Teachertube, podcasts, vodcasts, downloads from television sites etc. (where copyright allows)

Clickview 24/7 is a program for collecting televised programs into Clickview.

Clickview is becoming the main storage facility for all our AV material.

Taping Television Programs

Programs on television can also be taped by the library staff if staff require – please phone Megan or Ronda on extension 250.
