Mr. Matthew Byrne, Principal
On behalf of the College community I welcome you to Damascus College. Thank you for wanting to learn more about what Damascus College has to offer young people in their secondary education. Damascus College, a school in the Mercy tradition, is Ballarat’s only Catholic co-educational secondary college.
The emphasis at Damascus College is on community. The sense of belonging and being cared for are just two of the reasons why Damascus is such a great school.
Most important to us at Damascus is the welfare of our young people and hence the emphasis on providing an environment which is secure and safe, happy and productive. There is undoubtedly a direct connection between academic success and student wellbeing. Put simply, happy students learn better. The Teacher Advisor Program and House structure at Damascus is the basis of the pastoral care extended to students, care which is both comprehensive and individual.
Damascus College is recognised as a leader in curriculum development and innovation. The Year 7 to 10 curriculum emphasises core subjects of Religious Education, Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and Health & Physical Education. Students also have the opportunity to explore pathways through the Arts, Technology and LOTE.
As well as the formal curriculum offerings, Damascus students have the opportunity to be involved in a broad range of extra-curricular activities such as music, school productions, debating and public speaking, sports, retreats, local, interstate and overseas trips to mention just some of the possibilities offered.
Damascus College has high expectations of its students. Each student is encouraged to develop his/her full personal and academic potential. Our school community recognises and celebrates the distinctive individuality of each young person. We encourage, support and applaud each student who undertakes to complete the full six years of their secondary education.
Students graduate from Damascus College with a sense of their own identity, a sense of their own worth and a Christian understanding. They will have been challenged in many ways and can leave looking confidently to the future. Damascus College is committed to providing the most effective and purposeful learning environment for its students.
