On LOTE Day, staff and students at Damascus College will participate in a day of celebrating Languages. We will be celebrating this day with the theme “Languages come to Life again in Ballarat”. This will be the second day of celebrating languages that has occurred at Damascus College in recent years.

The day will involve all students and staff in an assembly followed by lunchtime activities and afternoon classes for years 7 and 8 students celebrating languages. The activities will be focused on the languages and cultures of France and Indonesia, but will also include a celebration of the diverse range of languages and cultures that exist in our local community. Some of these include the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Sudanese, Italian, Dutch and Chinese languages and cultures that exist within the Damascus community.

The celebrations will commence at midday (period 4) when Language students will begin the whole school assembly with the singing of the national anthems of France, Indonesia and Australia. This will be followed by presentations from senior language students, a parade of famous French celebrities and students dressed in traditional Indonesian costumes and Indonesian music and songs. There will also be presentations from Damascus students and staff who are familiar with other languages and cultures.

At lunchtime the canteen will serve a selection of international foods with a particular emphasis on French and Indonesian dishes. The International food theme will continue all that week.

During the afternoon year 7 and 8 students will be treated to special performances by visiting French or Indonesian entertainers.
