Debating and Public Speaking
Damascus offers a range of debating and public speaking opportunities for students at all year levels. Damascus enters teams in the Debater’s Association of Victoria (DAV) competitions each year, where the students have experienced great success. Damascus also enters debating teams in the Royal South Street competition held annually. A variety of opportunities are also available for individuals to be involved in public speaking events such as the Lions Club Youth of the Year, Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award and the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award.
Students have many opportunities to participate in leadership activities, in particular through our Student Representative Council (SRC) as well as through our captaincy program. Peer to peer mentoring is also available for Year 10s and 11s to mentor Year 7 students. The SRC consists of students who have been elected by their peers to serve the College community. Some of the tasks undertaken by the SRC are preparation and organisation of celebrations, fundraising activities and representation of the school at special occasions.
Justice Action Group & MAD
Students of the Justice Action Group are encouraged to be active in the development of the College’s social conscience by supporting causes at local, national and global levels. The regular meetings of the Justice Action Group coordinate the College based support for Caritas Australia (Project Compassion), St Vincent de Paul (Winter and Christmas Appeals) and Catholic Mission (Mission Month). An additional group known as MAD (Making a Difference) is a justice action group for younger students lead by JAG.
Students have the opportunity to participate in a Book Club that meets fortnightly in the fiction area of the library, to discuss books and authors, to help select new fiction for the library, and to enjoy the company of other reading enthusiasts.
Overseas cultural and language programs are offered to LOTE students in Years 10 to 12. Trips are undertaken in alternate years for French and Indonesian. Damascus College Ballarat has also commenced an East Timor Immersion Program for Year 11 students, who have the opportunity to visit our sister school in Ainaro, East Timor. These overseas experiences provide students with valuable insight into other cultures and also build on their foreign language skills.
Damascus offers students the opportunity to participate in a ski trip each year in August. The ski trip is organised over an extended weekend period. This trip is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the snow and try a new sport.
