Last week the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) released its Physical Activity Guidelines for Children and Young People. The guidelines are based on the latest scientific evidence associated with physical activity, sleep and the impact of sedentary behaviour. The guidelines indicated that for every 24 hours students should;
1. Accumulate 60 minutes or more moderate to vigorous physical activity, for example brisk walking, skipping, jogging, or any activity that has the result of ‘huff and puff’.
2. Have 8-10 hours of sleep per night for those aged 14-17. Up to 11 hours for those aged 5-13.
3. Limit sedentary recreational screen time to no more than 2 hours per day.
4. Avoid screen time 2 hours before bed and make bedrooms a screen free zone.

Currently staff and students are revising the regulations surrounding the use of Mobile Phones at school. Last week members of the SRC had the opportunity to express their opinions towards a responsible usage plan for phones at school. Staff have also provided feedback on this plan. Interestingly preliminary finding have indicated similar attitudes with staff and students on what constitutes responsible use. Over the coming weeks the Wellbeing Team will look into the opinions of staff and student and make a recommendation to Damascus Leadership on Mobile Phone usage at school. We look forward to sharing these with you.
