Jessica Harrison’s passion for the Arts runs deep. Growing up in a family that valued creativity, she was surrounded by handmade things and artistic expression. Her father, Adrian McMillan, ran his pottery business from the backyard and continues to be a passionate artist in various artforms. His creativity and dedication to artistic expression showed Jessica that art could be both a livelihood and a lifelong passion.
Jessica began teaching in 2006 after majoring in painting at university. Most of her teaching career was spent at Mount Clear College, leading vibrant arts programs and teaching VCE Art. In 2024, she joined Damascus College, and at the beginning of 2025, she was honoured to become Learning Area Leader for Arts.
The Arts at Damascus include Visual Arts, Visual Communication Design, Media, Drama and Music. Students begin exploring their creativity in the junior years, with opportunities to try all these areas and then specialise in senior subjects if they choose to continue in their study of the arts. Arts at Damascus College seeks to connect creativity to community, through exhibitions, performances, and projects that provide students a platform for personal expression and foster pride in themselves and the College community.
Below is a snapshot of student work:
Jessica believes art education is more than just “making art”—it’s about building confidence, problem-solving skills, empathy and resilience, preparing students to thrive in any path they choose. She’s most proud of her team’s supportive, inspiring environment, where students can take creative risks and achieve their best.
Right now, there’s a lot to celebrate: the College production of Oliver took place this term with huge success, visual art, VCD and media pieces are being prepared for exhibition across all year levels, and music students are composing and recording their own work. The commitment of the Arts staff to showcase our talented students’ work is unwavering, ensuring their creativity is celebrated, their achievements recognised, and their voices heard within our school community.
Jessica thanks the Arts staff for their passion and dedication, which bring the program to life every day. “Our team is the heart of the Arts at Damascus,” she says, “and it’s a privilege to work alongside them.”
